iSTART Learning

Effective education programs are about recognizing and nurturing the inherent potential within each child. When a child discovers their own capabilities and sees a path forward, something profound happens—they begin to believe in possibility, not just for themselves, but for their families and communities.

When children’s efforts produce a level of academic mastery, their skills lead to purpose and direction. They naturally become agents of transformation - not because we've programmed them, but because hope is inherently generative.

For an interior community, powerful and effective education is about honoring the reality that each child carries unique gifts, perspectives, and aspirations. A child who gains confidence and skills doesn't just improve statistics — he or she changes the trajectory of their life story, inspires their siblings, introduces new ideas to their village, and perhaps lights the way for others who thought change was impossible. The alternative — a generation feeling unseen, disconnected from opportunity, their potential untapped — is a collective heartbreak and a loss the nation cannot afford.

The Problem

In Kenya and across East Africa, English proficiency is not optional—it is the gateway to education, employment, and economic mobility. Yet millions of children in rural and underprivileged communities have virtually no access to proper English instruction. Their teachers often lack training in phonics, classrooms lack electricity, and there are no resources for the audio modeling that is essential for children learning English as a second language.

The result? An entire generation locked out of opportunities not because they lack intelligence or motivation, but because they cannot access the foundational tool of literacy. This perpetuates cycles of poverty that quality education should break.

Our Solution

We are developing a simple, solar-powered audio learning device that teaches English phonics systematically and accurately. This is not complicated te

Technology—it is intentionally simple, rugged, and designed for the reality of meeting under trees, in shed-like structures, and in communities without electricity.

A Solution to a Real Problem

iSTART Learning Educational materials are based on Project Based Learning (PBL), an essential cornerstone for successful education. As good as these materials are, each community will have unique needs. Rather than a “one-solution-fits-all” approach, we bridge the gap between learning environments with a personalized approach.

Our team of Education Engineers strategically evaluate the “reality factors” facing each community’s efforts to provide effective education for their children. We look for both their strengths and the challenges they must overcome to succeed.

Then, we evaluate which iSTART Learning materials will best serve their community. START has created a full spectrum of effective learning tools that positively impact education at every grade level. We want to provide the community with effective START materials, the PBL strategies that will contribute the most for their community to build a strong foundation for educating their children. Our goal is to see their community succeed in creating sustainable solutions for the education of their children.

Continued Focus

The basic concept:

  1. Using Alfi, we bring the level of literacy up by making it simple and easy to follow.

  2. Develop a mobile STEM Lab designed to deliver technology to extremely rural schools. By making it mobile, we can access more schools at a low cost and without the need for electricity! The Tech teacher accompanies the lab.

  3. Train the Educators. As students engage with technology, teachers receive individualized instruction from our certified teacher trainers.

  4. Create a network for the teachers to connect with each other and head teachers to support and give the teacher on going training when needed.
